Anand has been playing 1.e4 mostof the time in his career, but now he goes for 1. d4, which he already successfully employed in his previous title matches against Kramnik (in 2008) and Topalov (in 2010).} Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 {But Gelfand is out for a surprise: He plays the Grunfeld Defence, which he never played as Black in serious games before. So Anand has to decide now how to react. Surely Anand will check Gelfand’s knowledge in the main lines in the later games in the match, but in this game he goes for a pragmatic solution and choses a seldomly played line.} 4. Nf3 Bg7 5. cxd5 Nxd5 6. e4 Nxc3 7. bxc3 c5 8. Bb5%2B {The more popular options are 8.Be3 and 8.Rb1.} Nc6 9. d5 $5 {Anand is steering for immediate complications, hoping that he has a better knowledge here.} Qa5 {Black has to fight the pin of his knight.} (9... a6 $5 {is the main alternative. After} 10. Be2 Bxc3%2B 11. Bd2 Bxa1 12. Qxa1 Nd4 13. Nxd4 cxd4 14. Qxd4 f6 {Black is an exchange up, but White has a long-lasting inititiative.}) 10. Rb1 a6 11. Bxc6%2B bxc6 12. O-O {White enjoys a lead in development, but concrete considerations are more important now.} Qxa2 $1 { Gelfand picks up the gauntlet and takes a pawn. Certainly Anand must have analyzed this position in detail, since up to this move he has been playing quickly while Gelfand already spent considerable time on the clock. But over the next few moves Anand fails to find a convincing follow-up and the initiative goes over to Black. Did he simply forget his analysis?} 13. Rb2 Qa5 14. d6 {White’s main trump is the lead in development and the uncastled black king. So he has to act quickly.} Ra7 $1 {Accurate play by Gelfand. Since the e7-pawn is protected, he once again threatens to castle.} 15. Bg5 $6 {This is too lame.} (15. Bf4 O-O 16. Ne5 $5 {might be critical.} (16. dxe7 Rxe7 17. Bd6 Rd7 18. e5 Qxc3 {should be OK for Black.})) (15. dxe7) 15... exd6 {Black has to get rid of the d6-pawn.} 16. Qxd6 Rd7 {Another important detail: White’s queen has to leave her position, so that Black can castle.} 17. Qxc6 Qc7 $1 { And another precise move which gives Black a slight edge. Anand now has to be careful not to get into more serious trouble.} (17... O-O $5 18. Bf6) 18. Qxc7 Rxc7 {The smoke has cleared and Black enjoys long-term advantages (pair of bishops, passed a-pawn). White’s source of counterplay is the weakness of the c5-pawn.} 19. Bf4 Rb7 20. Rc2 (20. Ra2 $5 {appears more active, but Anand has already planned his defensive setup.}) 20... O-O 21. Bd6 Re8 22. Nd2 $1 {White has to keep his majority on the king’s side. His idea is playing f2-f4 and e4-e5, to restrict the g7-bishop.} (22. Bxc5 $2 Rxe4 {would trade Black’s weak c5-pawn against White’s strong e4-pawn. The open position would emphasize Black’s pair of bishops.}) 22... f5 {Black tries to open up the position for his bishops, but Anand is on the alert. It is difficult to say if Black has a better way to fight for the advantage here.} (22... Re6 23. Bxc5 Rc6 24. Ba3 { and Black cannot take back on c3, as he gets pinned on the c-file then.}) ( 22... Bd7 $5 23. f4 $1 (23. Bxc5 Rc8 {regains the c3-pawn, after which the black bishops come to the fore.}) 23... Bb5 24. Rfc1 Bd3 25. Ra2 {and White holds.}) 23. f3 (23. Bxc5 Rc7 24. Bb4 fxe4 {is playable for White, but Anand prefers to keep the position relatively closed.}) 23... fxe4 $6 {Now the game peters out.} (23... Bd7 $5 {instead deserves consideration. As compared to the position one move before, White doesn’t have the option to play f2-f4 here, Black still enjoys an advantage.}) 24. Nxe4 Bf5 {With a draw offer, which was accepted by Anand. The defending champion must have been relieved that the mishap in the opening didn’t have any more serious consequences.} ({After} 24... Bf5 25. Bxc5 Bxe4 26. fxe4 Rxe4 27. Ra2 {the remaining pawns on the queen’s side will be exchanged, when there is nothing left to play for.}) 1/2-1/2 '/>

In division 1, City 1's default hands Witney 1 the title in what must be a rather unsatisfying manner, and despite defaulting their match at Banbury. City 1's penalty points mean that Bicester 1 could still escape relegation at City's expense: after Bicester's win against Banbury, City need at least a draw in their final match against Cowley 2 to stay up.

City 2's surprise loss to Cowley 3 means that Didcot 1 win division 2. There's a four-way battle for second between City 2, Wantage 1, MCS Blackbirds 1 and Witney 2. Promoted Cowley 3 struggled and will finish bottom.

A convincing victory over City 4 means that Cumnor 1 have won division 3. Any of Banbury 2, Cowley Workers 1 and Didcot 2 could equal or surpass second-placed University 2's 16 points but of these only Cowley Workers have a head-to-head advantage over the university. Relegation is between Witney 3 and Bicester 2: Witney trail by a point but have two matches in hand.

Despite dropping a draw to St Clare's, MCS Blackbirds 2 have won division 4 and St Clare's have finished second: congratulations both. At the bottom, Cowley Workers 2 beat Cowley 4 heavily to move within a point of them; the Workers' last match looks easier so they could well escape the foot of the league.

Over the three weekends we've had four Witney and four Cumnor juniors taking part in the team, and with all eight of them available on the final day we even ended up with an A and a B team ... [... continue reading]
– Until 1980 the only way to show a chess
game was for a master to stand in front of a demo board and move the
magnetic pieces by hand. Then the BBC TV station pioneered a radical new
technology: using a glass chess table and chess pieces with symbols
stuck to their bases they brought us animated games, commented semi-live
by the players. You can watch these shows on YouTube. Read more http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=7787
