In division 1, City 1's default hands Witney 1 the title in what must be a rather unsatisfying manner, and despite defaulting their match at Banbury. City 1's penalty points mean that Bicester 1 could still escape relegation at City's expense: after Bicester's win against Banbury, City need at least a draw in their final match against Cowley 2 to stay up.

City 2's surprise loss to Cowley 3 means that Didcot 1 win division 2. There's a four-way battle for second between City 2, Wantage 1, MCS Blackbirds 1 and Witney 2. Promoted Cowley 3 struggled and will finish bottom.

A convincing victory over City 4 means that Cumnor 1 have won division 3. Any of Banbury 2, Cowley Workers 1 and Didcot 2 could equal or surpass second-placed University 2's 16 points but of these only Cowley Workers have a head-to-head advantage over the university. Relegation is between Witney 3 and Bicester 2: Witney trail by a point but have two matches in hand.

Despite dropping a draw to St Clare's, MCS Blackbirds 2 have won division 4 and St Clare's have finished second: congratulations both. At the bottom, Cowley Workers 2 beat Cowley 4 heavily to move within a point of them; the Workers' last match looks easier so they could well escape the foot of the league.

An outstanding performance from all our players this weekend, and a thoroughly deserved victory at the top of division 2 ahead of the very strong Yateley Manor A team.

Who would have thought as we headed up to Hinckley Island for that first weekend of the three in November that the team would be claiming the trophy and top prize money just a few months later? Over the three weekends we've had four Witney and four Cumnor juniors taking part in the team, and with all eight of them available on the final day we even ended up with an A and a B team ... Looking back at the BBC Master Game – thirty years later

game was for a master to stand in front of a demo board and move the
magnetic pieces by hand. Then the BBC TV station pioneered a radical new
technology: using a glass chess table and chess pieces with symbols

FIDE "FIRST" for Hastings

The world’s first ever FIDE-rated Blitz tournament will take place at the White Rock Hotel, Hastings on Monday 2nd January.

FIDE are starting to collect rating information from blitz and rapidplay games starting 1 January 2012. The two new lists will be published 1 July 2012. The standardplay ratings will not be affected by the blitz or rapidplay results. The ratings of players who are already FIDE-rated will be used initially.

Cowley Christmas Blitz Results

The 2011 Cowley Christmas Blitz was held on Monday 19 December, with 47
players taking part.

Marcus Harvey (Bicester) repeated his success in the 2009 Christmas
event, with 9.5 points out of 10, again winning by a margin of
1.5 points. Cowley's Heather Lang took second place, with Csaba
Koszta and Maria Wang half a point further back on 7.5.
